Jeff Emanuel has a nice overview piece at the American Thinker on the current immigration legislation process. It includes the problem with backroom deals and publically praising your successful creation before the bill is actually written. It’s a good piece if you’re just joining the immigration debate as it will catch you up on the last year or so in about 2 pages.
For the uninitiated, though, one might find the process being used to create such a sweeping and important law shocking.

The “Maveric” McCain lost his cool before the press conference to unveil his immigration plan:
Senator McCain responded: “F*** you! I know what is going on here. I know more about immigration than anybody in this room!â€Â

Mark Steyn of the Chicago Sun Times has an excellent piece on the Z-visas headed our way unless congress stops the mad train its on. It’s a longer article but the humor and sarcasim make it an enjoyable read. The first four paragraphs are below, check the link for the full scoop.
Are you a fine upstanding member of the Undocumented-American community? That’s to say, are you (if you’ll forgive the expression) an illegal immigrant?
Great news! Being illegal is now perfectly legal! Just for being one of the circa 12 million people who shouldn’t be here, you can now be here indefinitely! If you were living and working in America illegally before Jan. 1, 2007, you’re now entitled to one of the new Z-1 “probationary” visas. And your parents and spouses are entitled to one of the new Z-2 visas, and your children to the new Z-3 visas.
Don’t worry: It’s not an “amnesty.” Every politician in America is opposed to amnesty — if not the concept, then at least the word. That’s why the visa starts with the letter that’s furthest away from the one “amnesty” begins with. “Z” stands for zellout . . . no, hang on, zurrender or Zapatista, or some other word way up the other end of the alphabet from “amnesty.” But the point is, at a stroke there will be no more illegal immigrants. Because being illegal means you’re now legal.

Yesterday, the Senate voted for cloture on a motion to bring S. 1348 to the floor for debate without going through a committee process. Approving the motion by a 69-23 margin. The Senate will debate an Amend the bill this week and next. There will then be another cloture vote to end debate and vote on the bill. If 10 “Yea” votes are changed by the next cloture vote this bill will effectively be dead for this session of congress. If not prepare to welcome 20 million new illegals -er- legals to the country.
Here are the Senators that stood with the vast majority of the American people on the cloture vote:
Nay Votes
Allard (R-CO)
Baucus (D-MT)
Bunning (R-KY)

DeMint (R-SC)

Monday the 21st could be a historic day in America. It could be the day that the most sweeping immigration bill ever passes. Leading the way for 12-20 MILLION illegals to start the road to becoming US citizens while INCREASING the number of immigrants in this country by as much as 50 million over the next 5 years.
“Comprehensive” immigration reform indeed!
What makes today a day to watch is weither Republicans allow this bill to get through the Sentor’s procedural vote process. This is the area where the Republicans still have great deal of control. As many American’s probably remember from Supreme Court nominations, 60 Senators are required pass procedural hurdles. With Democrats in control of 51 seats (including the two indies that caucus with them), that means 9 Republicans have to agree to bring the bill to the floor for discussion (cloture vote). Since McCain’s name is on the bill we’re really only talking about 8 out 48 Republicans caving.
The sad part is that the underlying motivation seems to be adding the illegals to the voting public along party lines. And both parties seem convinced the citizens will vote with their party. The tragedy is that polls have over 80% of the American people AGAINST this bill. Senators that publicly supported this bill have been “Booed” South Carolina and Georgia this weekend. But apparently a crack at 12 million+ new voters is more important than angering the current voters.

It’s good to see admist all the news hype about criminals on the march more and more prominent American’s are realizing the true result of Amnesty. The term de jour keeps changing in the push for immigration “reform” but the end results remain the stay the same: eventual amenesty for 20 million illegals.
T. Willard Fair, a prominent Miami civil rights activist has taken a leading role in protesting immigration legislation that take jobs away from black Americans: “Amnesty for illegal workers is not just a slap in the face to black Americans. It’s an economic disaster.”

California is looking to pass a law that would give EVERY baby a $500 savings account. And they do mean every baby, since it will be “regardless of their parents’ income or immigration status.” I’m sorry, what? Come to America to have your baby illegals!! Not only will we allow your babies birth create an “anchor” for your immigration status - we’ll throw in $500 cash. Has the government gone completely mad?
Sadly, it gets much worse when you actually think about this proposal. Setting the illegals question aside lets look at the math behind this “encourage savings” project that will only cost California tax payers $285,000,000 each year. The article states that “If families added $50 a month to the state’s initial contribution, the savings account would grow to nearly $17,500 at 5 percent interest over 18 years.” ACTUALLY, if you know how to use a financial calculator (and set it to monthly payments of $50 instead of yearly payments of $600), the account will really grow to $18,687 (though you are supposed to give back the initial $500 at that point so $18,187). What it fails to point out is that if families saved the $50/month WITHOUT the governments $500 it would grow to $17,460. Well suddenly all that growth doesn’t look quite as impressive does it?
Beyond that, you can simply visit your local bank to discover that a 5% savings account is a tad optimistic. I called my broker and found my current money market rate to be 4.875% - which is actually up with rising interest rates. So really 3-4% is a more realistic CD/savings account rate. Change the ROI to 3.5% and the governments magic $500’s interest drops from the already low $727 to a mere $438.
But wait, there’s more! When you take into account inflation the money is worth even less. Inflation in this country is typically 2-3%, so we’ll use 2.5%. This means $438 of free government interest in 18 years will be worth the equivolent of $98 in today’s money. Everyone give the governement a standing “O” - they came up with a way to give everyone $98 for college, and it only costs $285 MILLION dollars a year

Recently, meat processing facilities were raided by immigration officials. They took over 1200 illegal immigrants (undocumented workers for the easily offended) into custody. Many, including our President, have made the claim that we need these workers to fill jobs that Americans will not do.
Well, apparently, people are lining up out the door trying to fill the jobs recently "vacated" by illegal immigrants. Guess the politicians need some new rhetoric for their amnesty program?
