Repubs Call For Drilling, Dems Call Recess

August 4th, 2008 by Editor: Scott

Nancy Pelosi’s response to House debate domestic drilling for oil on Friday was to turn off the lights & cameras and send everyone home.  The Republicans want to debate the merits of drilling for some of the over 100,000,000,000 barrels of oil sitting discovered, but untouched under federal lands and coastal waters.  The Democrats lacking any real response to such a suggestion opted for a 5 week vacation to avoid the issue.

The unfortunate “secret” is that the Democrats don’t want gas prices to come down.  Either because A) price shock at the pump will encourage ecological ends or because B) they feel that gas prices will be blamed on Bush (and not on the Congress that was elected with reducing fuel costs as a political promise) which will help Obama in November.

Despite the lack of session, several Republicans are making a stand on the floor of the House again today.  Approximatly 30 Republicans will hold an Energy Debate for “as long as it takes” to get Pelosi to start official bipartisan debate.

50% of Americans Pay 97% of Tax

July 26th, 2008 by Editor: Scott

Just a friendly reality check for those believing the lie that Bush’s tax cuts helped the rich and hurt the poor.  Sorry, the numbers don’t lie. We know, sometimes the truth hurts… the liberal world view.

Washington is teeing up “the rich” for a big tax hike next year, as a way to make them “pay their fair share.” Well, the latest IRS data have arrived on who paid what share of income taxes in 2006, and it’s going to be hard for the rich to pay any more than they already do. The data show that the 2003 Bush tax cuts caused what may be the biggest increase in tax payments by the rich in American history.

The nearby chart shows that the top 1% of taxpayers, those who earn above $388,806, paid 40% of all income taxes in 2006, the highest share in at least 40 years. The top 10% in income, those earning more than $108,904, paid 71%. Barack Obama says he’s going to cut taxes for those at the bottom, but that’s also going to be a challenge because Americans with an income below the median paid a record low 2.9% of all income taxes, while the top 50% paid 97.1%. Perhaps he thinks half the country should pay all the taxes to support the other half.

ARO Calls 24 Linkage Before Anyone Else

July 3rd, 2008 by Editor: Scott

That’s right, we even beat President Palmer himself to his connection with Obama and history.  What we wrote on April 19th is now being confirmed by 24 star Dennis Haysbert.  Heroes beget followers and copycats.  And sometimes other heroes.  We’ll let you decide which category Obama belongs.

Seattle: Ban Beach Bonfires Due To Global Warming

June 13th, 2008 by Editor: Scott

Seriously, this is for real:

Park department staff is recommending reducing bonfires at the two beaches this summer and possibly banning them altogether next year.

The park board will hear the recommendation Thursday, and the city plans to run public-service announcements and hand out brochures later this month about the effects of bonfires on global warming.

According to a memo to the park board from the staff released Thursday, “The overall policy question for the Board is whether it is good policy for Seattle Parks to continue public beach fires when the carbon … emissions produced by thousands of beach fires per year contributes to global warming.”

Under the proposal, the department in July would reduce the number of fire rings at Alki from six currently to three and at Golden Gardens from 12 to seven.

Respectable Totalitarianism

November 8th, 2007 by Senior Editor: Jeff

Mark Steyn reinforces our notion that the global warming alarmists have been overrun by people who only want to control others’ behavior:

It’s fascinating to observe how almost any old totalitarian racket becomes respectable once it’s cloaked in enviro-hooey. For example, restrictions on freedom of movement were previously the mark of the Soviet Union et al. But in Britain, they’re proposing limits on your right to take airline flights to other countries - and, as it’s in the name of environmental responsibility, everyone thinks it’s a grand idea.

Virtual Fence: Waste of Time & Money

April 24th, 2008 by Editor: Scott

Well it was Oct 26, 2006 President Bush signed into law a fence for 700 of the 2000 miles of southern border:

“Within about three years, we should have about 370 miles,” said [Senator] Kyl, whose state would be virtually sealed from Mexico through fencing and other barriers.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Ralph Basham said the fence could take many forms, from chain link to solid wall, depending on where it is placed. The shape will be determined with the help of Boeing Co., which was awarded a $67 million contract to install a high-tech “virtual fence” along 28 miles in Arizona. - Washington Post (10/27/06)

18 months later, how’s that 370 miles coming? Half way would be 185 miles of fence, Senator. Senator?  Most recently the virtual fence has been deemed an utter failure who’s “design will not be used as the basis for future developments”.  Yeah it’s not even worth building on for a virtual fence version 2.  Oh and I like how now that it failed it only cost tax payers $20M not the true $67M.  Sounds better when you only mention the construction costs and not the $47M of “other costs”.
